New Year Trip 1: How I Spend My New Year

By Vikra Alizanovic

Celebrating this year’s New Year’s Eve, we celebrate it in Jogja. At the 31st of December, we explore Jogja’s recreation place. We go to Ullen Sentalu Museum, the museum of Javanese traditional arts, which we will explain to you in another article. Then, we go to lunch at Boyong Kalegan, and to some other places. At the evening, we go to a Tourism Village, called Sogan Village, Desa Rejondani Ngaglik. At night, we decided to spend New Year’s Eve at my uncle’s neighborhood, roasting corn and grill fish.

But, my arrogant and selfish sister wanted to go to alun-alun. In there, there is a wide field which in the middle of the field stands 2 big beringin trees. The distance between those 2 trees aren’t far. It’s only about 10 meters or so. There is a local belief, which if you can manage to walk past between those 2 trees with your eyes closed; it means that you have a pure soul and good luck. Although it was only around 7 pm or so, the traffic is already jammed badly. Finally, we decided to turn back over and head back home. On the way back home, my mom still questioning my sister whether or not is she okay with this, because she was the one who asked to go there in the first place. I said to my mom, “Mom, don’t push it. Even if she really wanted to, what can you do? Didn’t you see the traffic?? ”. My mom spoiled my sister too much. Moreover, after that, my sister slept at the car until we came home.

After we arrived at my uncle’s house, all the neighbors were already gathering in one of their neighbor house. We joined them. It wasn’t that bad. It was quite pleasant, actually. They prepared barbeque, grilled fish, corn, some light drinks, ginger ale, and karaoke. I really enjoyed the food. I wanted to eat more but my mom told me to hold my appetite, since this is other people’s party, and we are just a mere guest. It was only me & my parents. My sister was already asleep. After some fish and some ginger ale, I was full. At around 10 o’clock, I was already sleepy so I went back to the house and sleep. In my sleep, I can hear the voice of people singing, which was quite annoying. Moreover, then, I hear my dad and my mom singing which is totally disturbing. A total racket. But, I was finally slept. A while later, I can hear a little voice of people counting down. I’m too tired to get up and celebrate, so I continue sleeping. The next morning, I wake up at around 8 am. I feel a little sad and disappointed for missing the party last night. But then I thought, there are still many years to come….
